RMAN backups, restored on a separate server and timed

Are you confident your RMAN backups can be restored?

We restore your latest RMAN backup onto a separate server, time it to an open database, and compare row counts with production.
If it fails, you find out now, with the reason.

How it works

Four steps

Step 1

Check the set-up

We read your RMAN configuration: retention, archive logs, control file and what is being backed up.

Step 2

Restore

Your latest backup goes onto a separate server you provide, timed from start to open database.

Step 3

Compare

We compare the restored database with your live one: objects, and row counts per table.

Step 4

Report

The measured restore time, what matched, and every gap we found, each with a suggested fix.

What you get

  • A review of your RMAN set-up
  • A full restore on a separate server, timed
  • Objects and row counts compared per table
  • Every gap found, with a suggested fix for your team

Limits of the test

  • We test the backups your team set up.
If they are incomplete, the test shows it; it cannot make them complete.
  • It shows that this backup restored, on this day.
Test again after any change, or twice a year with Oracle monthly support.
  • You provide the separate server, with the same Oracle version installed.
  • Oracle's published policy allows testing backups on an unlicensed server up to 4 times a year, 2 days per test.
Confirm with Oracle for your own contract.

Questions

Before you ask

Does the test touch our production database?Only to read the backup configuration and the counts we compare against.
The restore itself runs on the separate server.
What if the restore fails? Then you know now, before you need it.
The report says why it failed and what to change, and you can book a second test once it is fixed.
Do you change our backups?No.
We hand over the suggested fixes; your team applies them.
Can you test a Data Pump (expdp) export as well?Yes.
We import it onto the separate server and compare objects and row counts with production, the same way as a backup.
For an export test, the separate server may need its own Oracle licence; confirm with Oracle.
